Who Was Rakesh Kotecha in Emmerdale?
The character arrived as a possible arranged-marriage partner for Priya Sharma. He already knew the Sharma family because he had previously been a business rival of Jai Sharma.
The official ITV casting announcement presented him as a successful and apparently respectable professional. Jai Sharma remained suspicious and warned Priya Sharma that her potential husband might be concealing his true nature.
Despite those concerns, the couple developed a genuine relationship and married in March 2016. Financial pressure, criminal behaviour and repeated dishonesty eventually destroyed their marriage.

Why Did Rakesh Kotecha Change the DNA Results?
Vanessa Woodfield became pregnant after sleeping with Adam Barton while she was in a relationship with Kirin Kotecha. A DNA test established that Kirin Kotecha was the biological father of Johnny Woodfield.
The solicitor found the results before Vanessa Woodfield could read them. Believing that his teenage son was too young to become a father, he altered the paperwork to make Adam Barton appear to be the baby’s biological parent.
The deception was eventually discovered. Kirin Kotecha was furious that his father had prevented him from knowing the truth about Johnny Woodfield, causing their relationship to break down.
What Happened in the Mill Cottage Fire?
Financial problems led to the character’s most serious crime.
After investing heavily in Mill Cottage, he discovered that the property had extensive structural problems. The development was worth far less than expected, leaving him unable to manage his growing debts.
He poured white spirits around the building and started a fire, intending to make a fraudulent insurance claim. He did not know that Nicola King had entered the property shortly before the blaze.
An explosion left Nicola King seriously injured, while Ronnie Hale risked his life during the rescue. ITV’s official Mill Cottage fire preview shows how the planned insurance fraud became a potentially fatal disaster.
Although the solicitor felt guilty about the injuries, he continued hiding his responsibility.
Why Did He Leave Emmerdale?
The truth about the fire emerged in 2017. The disgraced lawyer was arrested and subsequently released on bail, but he faced the possibility of imprisonment.
His marriage was also collapsing. Priya Sharma admitted sleeping with Pete Barton, although his criminal secrets and dishonesty had already caused lasting damage to their relationship.
On June 14, 2017, the solicitor skipped bail and fled the village. The episode marked Pasha Bocarie’s final appearance in the programme.
Viewers never saw the fugitive die or receive a prison sentence, leaving his eventual destination unresolved.
Is Rakesh Kotecha Returning?
There is no confirmed return for Rakesh Kotecha.
ITV has not announced that Pasha Bocarie is reprising the role, and the former lawyer has not appeared since 2017. Claims describing a 2026 comeback as confirmed should be treated cautiously unless supported by ITV’s official Emmerdale updates.
A future appearance remains possible because the character is alive. His strongest remaining connection to the village is Johnny Woodfield, the son of Kirin Kotecha and Vanessa Woodfield. That family connection does not prove that a comeback is being planned.
