Priya Sharma became a familiar face in Emmerdale through her family relationships, troubled romances and several emotional storylines. The popular character was most closely associated with actress Fiona Wade, who played Priya for more than a decade.
From her relationship with David Metcalfe to the devastating fire that left her with serious burns, Priya experienced some of the village’s most difficult moments. She eventually left Emmerdale in January 2023, but the circumstances of her departure mean a future return remains possible.
Who Is Priya Sharma in Emmerdale?
Priya Sharma is the daughter of Rishi Sharma and Georgia Sharma. She is also the sister of Jai Sharma and Nikhil Sharma, placing her at the heart of one of Emmerdale’s best-known families.
Priya was initially presented as a confident, stylish and ambitious woman. However, viewers gradually saw the insecurities and personal struggles hidden beneath her confident appearance.
Her storylines explored family loyalty, motherhood, relationships, workplace pressures, eating disorders and recovery after a life-changing injury.
Who Played Priya Sharma?
Priya Sharma was originally played by Effie Woods when the character first appeared in 2009. The role was later recast, with Fiona Wade taking over in 2011.
Fiona Wade became the actress most viewers associate with Priya. According to ITV’s official Priya Sharma profile, Priya was played by Fiona Wade.
During her time in the soap, Fiona brought warmth and emotional depth to the character. She remained in the role until Priya’s departure in January 2023.
Priya Sharma’s Family
Family was an important part of Priya’s life in Emmerdale. She was particularly close to her father, Rishi Sharma, although their relationship was not always straightforward.
Priya also shared a complicated relationship with her brother Jai Sharma. The siblings could argue, especially when family or business problems created tension, but they often supported each other during serious situations.
Priya is also the mother of Amba Metcalfe. Amba’s father is David Metcalfe, and Priya’s responsibilities as a mother influenced many of her later decisions.
Her departure from the village was not only about beginning a new chapter for herself. It was also presented as an opportunity to build a better future for Amba.
Priya Sharma and David Metcalfe
Priya’s relationship with David Metcalfe became one of her most significant romantic storylines.
Their relationship resulted in Priya becoming pregnant with Amba. However, their romance was complicated because David had strong feelings for Alicia Gallagher.
David ultimately chose Alicia, leaving Priya heartbroken. Despite the difficulties between them, Priya and David remained connected through their daughter.
Priya later developed other relationships, but David continued to be an important part of her history because of their shared responsibility for Amba.
Priya’s Marriage to Rakesh Kotecha
Priya later married businessman and lawyer Rakesh Kotecha. Their relationship initially appeared to offer her greater stability, but serious problems soon emerged.
Rakesh became involved in financial difficulties and dishonest behavior. His actions damaged the marriage and placed Priya in dangerous and emotionally painful situations.
As Rakesh’s secrets were revealed, Priya was forced to reconsider their future together. Their relationship eventually collapsed, adding another difficult chapter to Priya’s romantic history.
Priya’s Eating Disorder Storyline
One of Priya Sharma’s most sensitive storylines involved her struggle with an eating disorder.
Priya developed anorexia while dealing with pressure surrounding her appearance and personal life. The storyline showed how she tried to hide her condition from the people around her.
Her illness also affected her pregnancy, increasing the concern of her family and friends. Priya eventually received support, but her recovery was not shown as an immediate or simple process.
The storyline allowed Emmerdale to explore how eating disorders can affect a person regardless of how confident or successful they might appear to others.
The Maze Fire and Priya’s Burn Injuries
Priya experienced another traumatic event during Emmerdale’s survival-week storyline in 2021.
A fire broke out in a maze during events involving serial killer Meena Jutla. Priya became trapped and suffered severe burns.
Although she survived, the injuries had a lasting physical and emotional impact. Priya struggled with her changed appearance, confidence and the reactions of other people.
Her recovery continued beyond the immediate aftermath of the fire. The storyline focused on trauma, body image and Priya’s attempt to regain control of her life.
Why Did Priya Sharma Leave Emmerdale?
Priya Sharma left Emmerdale after receiving a career opportunity in London.
Before her departure, Priya was working with the wedding-planning business Take A Vow. During an event, a bridal veil caught fire after coming into contact with candles.
The incident triggered painful memories of the maze fire and the burns Priya had suffered. Instead of allowing the experience to defeat her, Priya recognized how much progress she had made.
She accepted the London opportunity and decided to leave the village with Amba. Priya’s final episode aired on January 27, 2023.
Fiona Wade chose to leave Emmerdale because she wanted to pursue new acting opportunities and take on different professional challenges.
Did Priya Sharma Die?
Priya Sharma did not die in Emmerdale.
She left the village alive and began a new life in London with Amba. This is important because it gives producers the option of bringing Priya back in the future.
Her departure was emotional but positive, allowing the character to move forward after years of difficult experiences.
Will Priya Sharma Return to Emmerdale?
There has been no official confirmation that Priya Sharma is returning to Emmerdale.
However, the character still has strong connections to the village, particularly through Jai Sharma, David Metcalfe and Amba. A family emergency, business opportunity or relationship storyline could provide a believable reason for her to return.
Because Priya was not killed off, the door remains open. Any reports claiming that a comeback has been confirmed should be treated cautiously unless ITV or Fiona Wade makes an official announcement.
What Is Fiona Wade Doing Now?
Since leaving Emmerdale, Fiona Wade has continued developing her acting career.
Her work has included appearing in the stage thriller 2:22 A Ghost Story. She has also taken on television work outside Emmerdale, including a role connected to the American comedy series Going Dutch.
