Who Was Shadrach Dingle?
The character first appeared at the funeral of his nephew Butch Dingle in March 2000. His drunken behaviour immediately established him as one of the more chaotic members of the family.
He was usually shown as lazy, unhygienic and heavily dependent on alcohol. Some of his behaviour was initially used for comedy, but the programme also explored the serious consequences of his drinking and his treatment of his family.
His past included violence towards Faith Dingle and Cain Dingle. Chas Dingle had a somewhat closer relationship with her father, although she was also affected by his drinking and unreliability.
Despite his destructive behaviour, he occasionally displayed affection and vulnerability. Those moments became particularly important after he was reunited with Gennie Walker.

Who Played Shadrach Dingle?
Andy Devine played the character for approximately ten years and appeared in hundreds of episodes.
Before joining Emmerdale, Andy Devine appeared in programmes including Z Cars, Cracker, Doctor Who and Queer as Folk. He had also made an earlier Emmerdale appearance as a different character named Baz Bradstone.
Andy Devine died on January 27, 2022, at the age of 79. The news became public several months later. ITV News remembered Andy Devine as a significant part of the Dingle family and one of Emmerdale’s familiar faces.
The Shadrach Dingle Family Explained
Faith Dingle was his former wife and the mother of Chas Dingle. During their marriage, both believed that Cain Dingle was also their biological son.
It was eventually revealed that Zak Dingle was Cain Dingle’s biological father. Faith Dingle had become pregnant after sleeping with her husband’s younger brother.
The revelation explained part of the long-running hostility between Cain Dingle and the man who had raised him. However, the biological discovery did not erase the effect that his abusive childhood had on Cain Dingle.
The family connections can be summarised as follows:
- Faith Dingle: Former wife
- Chas Dingle: Biological daughter
- Gennie Walker: Biological daughter with Shirley Pascoe
- Cain Dingle: Raised as his son but biologically the son of Zak Dingle
- Zak Dingle: Younger brother
- Aaron Dingle: Grandson through Chas Dingle
- Molly Sharma: Granddaughter through Gennie Walker
How Was Gennie Walker Related to Him?
Gennie Walker, whose full first name was Genesis Walker, was his biological daughter from an affair with Shirley Pascoe.
Shirley Pascoe died while giving birth. Grieving and unable to care for the baby, the new father placed Genesis Walker for adoption. Brenda Walker later raised her.
Father and daughter were reunited in 2008. Their early relationship was uncomfortable, but they gradually became close. Gennie Walker helped reveal a more sensitive side to a character usually associated with selfishness and alcohol.
Chas Dingle initially struggled with the attention given to her newly discovered half-sister. The two women eventually developed their own relationship as members of the wider Dingle family.
How Did Shadrach Dingle Die?
In 2010, doctors diagnosed him with serious alcohol-related liver disease and warned that continuing to drink could kill him.
He was unable to stop. On July 23, 2010, he experienced severe pain while crossing a footbridge and dropped several beer cans into the water. He fell into the river while attempting to retrieve them and drowned.
Marlon Dingle and Rhona Goskirk found him but could not save him. The official cause of death was drowning, although a postmortem established that his damaged liver would probably have killed him within hours.
The Dingle family buried him on their own land. His death created guilt and conflict, particularly for Marlon Dingle, who had angrily rejected his uncle shortly before the fatal incident.
