Spoilers for Emmerdale episodes airing during the week of 5 October 2026.
Charity Dingle is coming home from prison. The news catches her by surprise, and her family will be ready to welcome her back to the village. But the person she most wants to see is not there.
Sarah Sugden helped push for Charity Dingle’s release. She is also the granddaughter who feels deeply betrayed by her. When Charity Dingle notices Sarah Sugden’s absence from the family gathering, it becomes clear that getting out of prison will be easier than repairing their relationship.
The two will eventually meet privately at The Woolpack. Emmerdale has confirmed that Charity Dingle hopes for forgiveness, but it has not revealed whether Sarah Sugden is ready to give it.
A welcome with someone missing
ITV’s preview for the week of 5 October confirms that Charity Dingle will be surprised to learn she is being released. Once home, she will seek out Sarah Sugden.
The family welcome should be a moment of relief after the uncertainty of prison. Instead, Sarah Sugden’s absence gives Charity Dingle an immediate reminder of what has changed. Sarah Sugden wanted her grandmother brought home, but she has chosen not to be part of the first celebration.
That distinction matters. Wanting Charity Dingle out of prison does not require Sarah Sugden to act as though their argument is over. Likewise, Charity Dingle cannot assume that the lengths Sarah Sugden went to on her behalf amount to forgiveness.
Upcoming scenes will bring them face-to-face after Charity Dingle asks Sarah Sugden to speak privately in The Woolpack’s back room. The rest of the family will be left waiting to learn whether the conversation helps or makes the distance between them clearer.
Why Sarah Sugden is still hurt
Their rift began long before Charity Dingle was locked up. Charity Dingle had offered to carry a baby for Sarah Sugden and her husband, Jacob Sugden. Sarah Sugden believed baby Leyla Sugden was theirs. The truth was that Charity Dingle was Leyla Sugden’s biological mother and Ross Barton was the father.
For Sarah Sugden, the discovery changed more than a family arrangement. She had been raising a child while being kept from the truth about that child’s parentage. Charity Dingle’s intentions cannot undo the effect of that deception, and Sarah Sugden’s anger did not disappear when the police became involved.
The situation then grew far more serious after the death of Dr Caitlin Todd. Sarah Sugden accidentally killed the doctor, and Charity Dingle took responsibility to protect her granddaughter. After learning the truth about Leyla Sugden, Sarah Sugden changed her statement and accused Charity Dingle of deliberately killing Dr Caitlin Todd. Charity Dingle was charged with murder and held while awaiting trial.
Sarah Sugden later tried to withdraw the accusation, but the police were not persuaded. Her effort to secure Charity Dingle’s release now shows how urgently she wants to put that right. It does not settle how she feels about the original lie.
What can Charity Dingle say?
Charity Dingle has a chance to speak to Sarah Sugden without the wider family listening. That may be exactly what they need, but it also removes any easy escape from the difficult parts of the story.
An apology would have to address Sarah Sugden’s experience, not just Charity Dingle’s reason for keeping the secret. Sarah Sugden lost the chance to make informed decisions about Leyla Sugden while the truth was hidden from her. Charity Dingle, meanwhile, went to prison after trying to shield Sarah Sugden from responsibility for Dr Caitlin Todd’s death.
Neither fact cancels out the other. Sarah Sugden can recognise what Charity Dingle risked for her and remain angry about Leyla Sugden. Charity Dingle can be grateful to be home and still struggle with the statement that helped put her behind bars.
That is what makes their private meeting more compelling than the release itself. The question is not simply whether either woman cares about the other. Their actions suggest they do. The question is whether they can talk honestly about the harm they have caused without expecting one conversation to fix it all.
Is Charity Dingle’s ordeal over?
Charity Dingle’s return is confirmed, but the previews do not explain every step behind her release or say that all questions surrounding Dr Caitlin Todd’s death have been resolved. Her freedom is a major change in the story, not confirmation that its legal and family consequences have vanished.
The outcome of the meeting with Sarah Sugden is also being kept back. Viewers know that Charity Dingle will seek forgiveness and that Sarah Sugden initially stays away from the welcome home. They do not yet know what Sarah Sugden will say when the two finally sit down together.
For now, Emmerdale is setting up two different homecomings. Charity Dingle will return to a family relieved to see her. Whether she can find her way back to Sarah Sugden remains the harder question.
