Who Is Robert Sugden?
Born on screen in April 1986, he is a direct descendant of Emmerdale’s original farming family. Pat Sugden died in a car accident while her son was still a baby. Jack Sugden raised him with help from the wider family, and Sarah Sugden later became an important maternal figure.
His childhood was shaped by competition with Andy Sugden, who entered the household as a foster child and was eventually adopted. He often believed Jack Sugden preferred his adopted son. That resentment developed into one of the village’s longest and most destructive sibling rivalries.
As an adult, Robert Sugden became ambitious, persuasive and skilled at manipulating people. He could show fierce loyalty to those he loved, especially Victoria Sugden and Aaron Dingle, but his attempts to control events frequently caused more damage. That tension between devotion and selfishness remains the core of the character.
Who Has Played Robert Sugden?
Four actors have portrayed the character:
| Actor | Period in the role |
|---|---|
| Richard Smith | 1986-1989 |
| Christopher Smith | 1989-2001 |
| Karl Davies | 2001-2005, plus a 2009 guest appearance |
| Ryan Hawley | 2014-2019 and 2025-present |
Ryan Hawley is the current actor and the longest-serving adult portrayal. ITV’s 2014 casting announcement said the role required a balance of charm and edge, qualities that became central to the stories involving Chrissie White, Katie Sugden and Aaron Dingle.
The 2014 change was a recast rather than a new character. Ryan Hawley’s first episodes showed Robert Sugden returning to the village as Chrissie White’s fiance and becoming part of the wealthy White family at Home Farm.
The Rivalry With Andy Sugden
The brothers’ conflict began long before either reached adulthood. Andy Sugden started the barn fire that killed Sarah Sugden, and Robert Sugden knew the truth. The secret intensified existing jealousy over Jack Sugden’s affection and control of the family farm.
Katie Sugden later became another source of conflict. She had a relationship with Robert Sugden while engaged and then married to Andy Sugden. The betrayal damaged both brothers and became a defining part of their early adult stories.
In 2005, the rivalry culminated in a dangerous game of chicken involving two cars. Max King died in the resulting crash. Jack Sugden blamed his biological son and forced him to leave the village.
Karl Davies briefly returned for Jack Sugden’s funeral in 2009. When Ryan Hawley assumed the role five years later, old tensions resurfaced before the brothers eventually achieved a limited reconciliation. Andy Sugden later went on the run after Chrissie White framed him for shooting Lawrence White.
What Happened to Katie Sugden?
Katie Sugden discovered the secret affair between Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle at Wylie’s Farm in February 2015. During a confrontation, he pushed her. The floor beneath Katie Sugden collapsed, causing her to fall to her death.
The fall was not shown as a planned killing, but the push made him responsible. He then concealed his involvement and allowed Andy Sugden to grieve without knowing what had happened.
The death demonstrated the most dangerous side of the character: a reckless act followed by an elaborate effort to protect himself. It also ensured that the relationship with Aaron Dingle began under the weight of a devastating secret.
The Relationship With Aaron Dingle
Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle began an affair while the businessman was engaged to Chrissie White. Their early relationship involved secrecy, lies and serious harm, yet it developed into one of Emmerdale’s central romances.
He initially struggled to discuss his sexuality openly. The character later identified as bisexual and explained that Jack Sugden had reacted violently after discovering his teenage attraction to a male farm worker. His relationships with women were genuine, as was his love for Aaron Dingle.
The couple attempted to marry in 2017, but the ceremony was interrupted before becoming legally binding. They held a legal wedding in 2018 and built a home together. Their relationship survived separations, infidelity and criminal schemes before the 2019 prison sentence forced them apart.
Robert Sugden later initiated divorce proceedings from prison. He believed Aaron Dingle should be free to rebuild his life instead of waiting through a lengthy sentence. The decision ended the legal marriage but did not erase their emotional connection.
Does Robert Sugden Have a Child?
Yes. Sebastian White is the son of Robert Sugden and Rebecca White.
Sebastian White was conceived after the businessman slept with Rebecca White during a break in his relationship with Aaron Dingle. The pregnancy caused further conflict, but he became committed to fatherhood after the baby was born in 2017.
Rebecca White eventually began a relationship with Ross Barton. She left the village with Ross Barton and Sebastian White, with the child’s father accepting that the move could provide a more stable life.
The recent episodes have not made Sebastian White a central presence. However, no confirmed storyline has changed the established paternity, and the child remains an important part of the Sugden family tree.
Why Did Robert Sugden Go to Prison?
The prison sentence followed an attack on Lee Posner, the man who raped Victoria Sugden. In 2019, the protective brother struck Lee Posner with a shovel. Lee Posner later died in hospital, changing the legal consequences of the assault.
He briefly planned to flee with Aaron Dingle but recognized that a life on the run would destroy them both. After handing himself in, he received a minimum 14-year prison sentence and was transferred to the Isle of Wight.
The storyline ended Ryan Hawley’s first regular run in October 2019. It also left Aaron Dingle grieving a partner who was still alive but expected to remain absent for many years.
How Did Robert Sugden Return in 2025?
Ryan Hawley made an unannounced comeback during the May 2025 wedding of Aaron Dingle and John Sugden. The returning character was still technically a prisoner at that stage, so the appearance did not immediately amount to permanent freedom.
In an official interview about the secret comeback, Ryan Hawley explained that the production used the code name “Marco,” private transport and a separate entrance to prevent the reveal from leaking. The actor also confirmed that the appearance would lead into a larger story.
Robert Sugden subsequently received early release and moved back to the village. The show explored the effects of prison through fear, disrupted sleep and defensive reactions. Viewers also learned that he had married Kev Townsend while incarcerated. That relationship was connected to survival and coercion rather than a settled new life.
The return placed him in immediate conflict with John Sugden, the previously unknown son of Jack Sugden. John Sugden had married Aaron Dingle and was concealing his role in Nate Robinson’s death.
Suspicious of the evidence, Robert Sugden investigated the death and challenged his half-brother. John Sugden retaliated by framing him for pushing Aaron Dingle and John Sugden over a gorge. Aaron Dingle eventually recovered his memory and exposed the truth, allowing the innocent suspect to be freed in September 2025.
What Happened During Corriedale?
The January 2026 crossover brought the conflict with John Sugden to its conclusion. Robert Sugden pursued his fugitive half-brother, and a struggle involving a gun ended with Cain Dingle being shot.
John Sugden later attacked Victoria Sugden. She defended herself by injecting him with a drug-filled syringe, causing his death. Victoria Sugden then staged the scene to resemble suicide.
Joe Tate secretly recorded evidence of the cover-up and used it to blackmail the surviving siblings. To protect Victoria Sugden, Robert Sugden cooperated with Joe Tate and helped plant evidence against Moira Dingle. The scheme enabled Joe Tate to gain control of Butler’s Farm and again placed the protective brother on morally dangerous ground.
Victoria Sugden eventually left the village with Harry Sugden while struggling with the aftermath. Her departure left Robert Sugden carrying much of the family’s active legacy in Emmerdale.
Are Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle Together in 2026?
Yes. They reunited and became engaged again after the downfall of John Sugden. Their current relationship is serious, although prison trauma and the secrets surrounding Victoria Sugden continue to place them under pressure.
The couple also began a shared career as farmers. In March 2026, ITV confirmed their move to Emmerdale Farm as new tenants. Restoring the historic name honored Jack Sugden, Annie Sugden and the program’s original farming roots.
The development gives the reunion a purpose beyond romance. As a young man, Robert Sugden repeatedly fought Andy Sugden over belonging and inheritance. Running the farm now offers a chance to build a healthier connection to that history with Aaron Dingle beside him.
A further wedding was previewed for 2026. Until the ceremony is shown, the precise position is that the former husbands are reunited and engaged rather than already legally remarried.

The latest episodes position him as a partner, farmer and still-imperfect protector rather than simply revisiting his old conflicts.
