Beth Cordingly joined Emmerdale in 2024 as Ruby Fox-Miligan, the fiercely protective wife of Caleb Miligan. What began as the arrival of a disruptive new family member became one of the soap’s most demanding roles, particularly when Ruby’s past came into focus.
The actor was already familiar to British television viewers before arriving in the Dales. Her credits include Family Affairs, The Bill and Dead Set. For anyone searching for a current update, she was still appearing as Ruby Miligan in September 2026; no confirmed departure from Emmerdale has been announced.
Who is Beth Cordingly?
Beth Cordingly is an English actor with a career across television and theatre. She played Sara Warrington in Family Affairs and PC Kerry Young in The Bill, two roles that introduced her to regular drama audiences well before Emmerdale.
Her other screen work includes Dead Set and The Burning Girls. Theatre has also been part of her career, giving her a range of experience before she took on a character who could move from sharp humour to emotionally difficult scenes within the same soap.
ITV announced her Emmerdale casting in December 2023. Ruby Fox-Miligan made her on-screen debut the following January. At the time, ITV described a confident and unpredictable woman whose loyalty to her family could quickly turn destructive when she felt threatened.
That introduction captured Ruby’s energy, but it did not tell her whole story.
Who does Beth Cordingly play in Emmerdale?
Beth Cordingly plays Ruby Miligan, introduced as Ruby Fox-Miligan. Ruby is married to Caleb Miligan, played by William Ash, and is the mother of Nicky Miligan, played by Lewis Cope. Her daughter, Steph Miligan, played by Georgia Jay, later became central to the family’s story.
Ruby arrived with a complicated history. Caleb Miligan had built connections in the village, while his marriage had been far from settled. Ruby did not enter quietly or pretend to be pleased about every new person in his life. She challenged people directly and often made a difficult situation louder.
Yet treating Ruby as simply a troublemaker misses what has kept the character interesting. Her decisions are frequently driven by fear of losing the people she loves. That does not make every decision reasonable, but it gives Beth Cordingly something more substantial to play than a succession of arguments.
What happened in Ruby’s family storyline?
The arrival of Ruby’s estranged father, Anthony Fox, and daughter, Steph Miligan, changed how viewers understood her behaviour. A family reunion that appeared promising to some characters was deeply distressing for Ruby.
The story revealed that Anthony Fox had sexually abused Ruby when she was young. It also forced Ruby and her family to confront long-held secrets and the damage caused by years of silence. Her strained relationship with Steph Miligan could no longer be understood as a simple clash of personalities.
These scenes asked for a different performance from the one viewers had seen when Ruby first arrived. Beth Cordingly still had to show Ruby’s anger and instinct to defend herself, but also the vulnerability beneath them. The storyline did not erase Ruby’s previous actions. It gave the audience a fuller understanding of why closeness and trust could be so difficult for her.
Because the subject is serious, the distinction between actor and character matters. Anthony Fox’s abuse is part of Emmerdale’s fictional story; Beth Cordingly’s task was to portray its impact with care.
Why do Ruby and Caleb Miligan work as a pair?
Ruby Miligan and Caleb Miligan are rarely a calm couple. Their relationship can be affectionate, competitive and volatile, sometimes within a single conversation. Both are capable of trying to control events, and both can make matters worse while claiming to protect the other.
That tension gives Beth Cordingly and William Ash room to play scenes that are not easily reduced to “together” or “split up”. Even when Ruby and Caleb disagree, their long shared history remains visible. The arrival of Nicky Miligan and Steph Miligan widened the story beyond marriage: choices made by the parents affected the children, and family secrets became impossible to contain.
The actors were nominated together for Best On-Screen Partnership at the 2025 British Soap Awards. Beth Cordingly also received a Best Leading Performer nomination for her portrayal of Ruby. The recognition reflected how much of the character’s history had moved to the foreground.
What happened to Ruby in 2026?
Ruby remained involved in major Emmerdale drama during 2026. In September, Joe Tate targeted her during a revenge plot and Ruby was buried alive. Caleb Miligan and Graham Foster reached her, and the character survived the ordeal.
For anyone who saw a headline about Ruby facing death, that is the important update: the dangerous storyline was not an on-screen exit. Beth Cordingly continued to be associated with the role after those scenes, and there was no verified announcement that she was leaving the cast as of 3 October 2026.
Soap plots can change quickly, so a future storyline should not be presented as settled before ITV confirms it. A character surviving one crisis does not promise a particular direction for the next.
Is Beth Cordingly’s Ruby the same as Ruby Haswell?
No. Emmerdale has featured two different characters named Ruby.
Beth Cordingly plays Ruby Miligan, who arrived in 2024. Ruby Haswell was an earlier character played by Alicya Eyo. They have different families and different storylines. The shared first name can make older search results confusing, especially when an article simply says “Ruby from Emmerdale”.
